Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)

DEFRA was set up to take over some of the responsibilities of the discredited Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Farming (MAFF). The department has a remit to promote sustainable agricultural and environmental development in the UK. There is some good statistical information on this site.

The department provides specialist guidance to general practitioners, dentists and social workers, to help promote healthier lifestyles and living. Responsible for the promotion of the 5-A-DAY message in the UK.

Food Standards Agency

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) was set up by an Act of Parliament in 2000 to take over some of the responsibilities of the discredited Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Farming (MAFF). The FSA has a remit to protect the public's health and consumer interests in relation to food.
